The Ring of Fire!!!
Hello everyone, and welcome to our page on volcanoes! This page was created by J.R and we hope you enjoy the page.
A volcano is a weak spot in the crust where magma has come to the surface. There are three types of volcanoes and they are, shield, cinder-cone, and composite volcanoes. The difference between the three are shield volcanoes is a wide gently-sloping mountain made of layers of lava and formed by quiet eruptions. But, cinder-cone volcanoes is a steep cone shaped hill or mountain made out of volcanic ash, cinders, and bombs piled up around a volcano's opening. Finally a composite volcano is a tall cone shaped mountain in which layers of lava alternate with layers of ash and other volcanic materials.
The Ring of Fire is a major belt of volcanoes that rims the Pacific Ocean.
KEY: Black= boundaries, Red=Active Volcanoes, The arrows point where the Ring of Fire is located.
The Ring of fire is a ring of volcanoes around the Pacific Ocean that result from subduction of oceanic plates beneath lighter continental plates. Volcanoes grow and are made up two things. They grow by intrustion and extrusion. Instrustion is magma that moves upward, and extrusion is the eruption of material and it causes the volcano to grow and build up! http://volcano.oregonstate.edu/
This is an image of just one of the 452 volcanoes on the Ring of Fire. This volcano is located in Costa Rica . It is called just like the other volcanoes in Costa Rica "Marvels of Fire." It is one of the many natural wonders of Costa Rica! Click on the image for more interesting facts on the amazing and astonishing volcanoes of Costa Rica!
What is the difference between lava and magma?
Well, there is still a lot of things to learn about volcanoes! Like what is the difference between lava and magma? Well, magma is the molten mixture of rock- forming, substance, gases, and water from the mantle. Lava is liquid magma that reaches the surface, also the rock formed when liquid lava hardens. So that right there is the differences between lava and magma.
Fun Facts!
*Did you know that the tallest volcano in our solar system isn't even on Earth! It is actually on Mars. It is 27 km, and it measures 550 km across!
*The tallest and biggest volcanoes on Earth are right next to each other! The tallest stands at a whopping 4,207 meters. Its only a little bit taller than its next door neighbor that is standing at 4,169 meters high!
*The most deadly eruption happened in Indonesia, with tens of thousands of lives lost to starvation, tsunami, [as a result of the eruption], ash, and mudflows.
*Not all volcano eruptions are loud, some can be quiet and hissing almost.
*The louder the eruption is the more damage it does. Because if it is really bad it can result in hearing loss. It may also result in broken glass.
*An erupting volcano can cause tsunamis, flash floods, earthquakes, mudflows, and rocks falls!
*If you are in a 20- mile radius of a volcano I would be careful because that is the danger area for erupting volcanoes!
*In eruptions, rocks and gases shoot up out of an opening and spill over or they fill the air with fragments of lava.
Can you predict if a volcanic eruption is going to happen?
Well, volcanoes are not very easy to predict. The only way to predict if a volcano is going to erupt soon is if it has a high erupting rate. What we mean by that is if the volcano seems to erupt a lot of times, then you can easily predict that the volcano you are wondering about could erupt at any time.
How to prepare for a volcanic eruption!
When any type of natural disaster occurs the first thing you should be worried about is your safety, and the safety of your family. So read this to learn how to be prepared for a volcano. You should be prepared to do all of these things if you live near a volcano. You should put a pair of goggles in a ready kit for each member of your family along with a mask in case of high ash levels. You should most definitely stay away from active volcanoes. If you live near a volcano, it doesn't matter if it is active or dormant, you should learn about your community and their warning system and emergency plans. You should also be ready to evacuate the area at anytime! It is also best for you and your family to have an emergency disaster plan ready. Look it over every once and a while so that you are an expert on what to do during the eruption or any natural disaster to that matter. So there you have it, how to prepare for a volcanic eruption!
How do Lava plateaus form?
Lava plateaus form by instead of forming mountains some eruptions can cause lava plateaus to form. But how do they form you ask? Well the very first step for them to form is lava has to flow down out of cracks in an area. The thin, runny lava moves far before cooling and solidifying. The, again and again, floods of lava flow on top of earlier floods. After millions of these layers have been causing lava plateaus to form. So there you have it, that is how lava plateaus have been forming for years.
More need to know words!
Hot spot-an area where magma from deep within the mantle melts through the crust above it.
Island arc- a string of islands formed by the volcanoes along a deep ocean trench.
Caldera- a large hole at the top of a volcano formed when the roof of a volcanoes magma chamber collapses.
Volcanic neck- a deposite of hardened magma in a volcano's pipe.
Batholith- a mass of rock formed when a large body of magma cooled inside the crust.
Sill- a slab of volcanic rock formed when magma squeezes between layers of rock.
Dike- a slab of volcanic rock formed when magma forces itself across rock layers.
